INFORMATION ABOUT ZARAGOZA
ZARAGOZA 2008
THE INDEPENDENT

Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon, and the fifth city of Spain (over 700.000 inhabitants). It begun as an Iberian settlement (Salduie)in the confluence of the Ebro, Huerva and Gállego rivers. It was then refunded by the Romans as Caesaraugusta, and subsequently ruled by the Arabs and by the Christians. During the Middle Ages it was the capital of the Kingdom of Aragón, itself part of the Aragonese Crown, comprising the territories of current Aragón, Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic islands, the island of Sicily, and the dukedom of Naples.

Nowadays, Zaragoza is a modern city, which spreads around both sides of the Ebro river. Zaragoza has been a university city for 500 years, and it counts with more than 50.000 higher education students. Most of the schools and faculties are found either in the Campus of San Francisco or in the technological Campus Rio Ebro, where the Congress will take place.

The historic city centre (popularly known as "casco viejo") is a fine summary of Zaragoza history. Chief Roman remains are the Foro, the Theatre, the Fluvial Port, the Terms and stretches of the city walls. In the Square of El Pilar, you will find the Gothic cathedral of La Seo, a wonderful blend of styles, and the Basilica of El Pilar, with frescoes by Francisco de Goya. The Arab palace of the Aljafería is one of the best exponents of Muslim art outside Andalusia. The mudejar towers of Zaragoza (La Magdalena, San Miguel, San Gil, San Pablo) are listed as Unesco World Heritage. Several renascence Palaces host art collections (gothic tables and paintings by Zurbarán, the Greek and Goya, in the museum Camón Aznar; early XXth Century sculpture, in the museam Pablo Gargallo). The International Exhibition held in Zaragoza in 2008, has integrated the rives in the city and has left award-winning modern buildings and bridges. Walking and cycling the riversides is now really inviting. On the other hand, the large student population makes night life vivacious, especially during the weekends, when Zaragoza welcomes many visitors.
