Personal statement
I have been a member of the Department of English Philology at the University of Zaragoza since 2019 and I currently teach as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the Teruel campus. I have recently obtained a cum laude mention for my doctoral thesis in English Studies, entitled “Persuasive SciComm 2.0.: A Multimodal Approach to the Study of Rhetoric in Science Crowdfunding Videos (SCVs)”. My main areas of research are gender theory, rhetoric, persuasive scientific communication, multimodality and semiotics, although I have also previously researched linguistic landscapes, World Englishes and the teaching of English as a lingua franca. I have participated in the research project GENCI 2.0.- Digital Genres and Open (PID2019- 105655RB-I00) since its inception in 2019 and since then I have been a member of the CIRES research group (Intercultural Communication and Social Challenges) funded by the Government of Aragon and the European Union. I joined the BIFI research institute in 2022 to contribute research in the Digital Science lab of the area of Computation and data science.
Researcher profile identity
I am currently an R2 researcher and I study persuasive science communication strategies, specifically through the multimodal analysis of science crowdfunding videos. In these videos, scientists seeking funding for their research projects have just a couple of minutes to convince all kinds of audiences on the Internet to donate money to carry out these projects. My work therefore consists of, after designing a rigorous method of data collection and analysis, observing what strategies these people use to communicate persuasively, not only through verbal language but also through the use of images, audiovisual effects and body language.
Why my research is important
Through my research, I aim to teach persuasive communication strategies to current and future generations of scientists, in order to help them gain public interest and participation, in line with the Open Science movement that governs today’s knowledge society. In didactic terms, the results of my study will lead to pedagogical materials in the area of English for specific purposes that will be applicable in any academic environment related to scientific communication.
